A Million Scattered Pieces is an experimental publication and an editorial experiment inside my practice. I want it to be personal, warm, friendly, inviting, and exploratory.
I have wanted to move away from social media for some time. Increasingly, I think of Instagram as an archive rather than the primary place where the work should live. A newsletter platform can be useful as a delivery method, but the focus for me is the web: spaces and systems I can make and control myself, designed around the specific needs of the work rather than the requirements of a social platform.
Collaboration is a major feature of my practice, and I want that to be central here too.
The editorial structure also gives me a practical reason to focus. I make a lot of things. Projects can drift, get interrupted, or fall by the wayside. Publishing publicly creates some accountability and gives me a structure for returning to things, examining them again, and bringing them forward.
Part of this project comes from feeling that we are living through several overlapping cultural shifts.
AI feels like a radical technological and cultural change. If the conditions have changed radically, I feel a need to change how I work as well: to question these tools, examine them, try them, understand what they do, and make some of that investigation public.
The internet itself feels different after the introduction of this AI layer. The histories and assumptions of the last twenty years suddenly look different from where we are standing now.
The pandemic was another enormous cultural rupture. Politically, the United States is in a frightening period as well. I don't necessarily want this publication to become a publication about national politics. I've found myself concentrating instead on smaller changes I can actually make within my own community.
What can we make? What can we learn? What can we share? What can we give each other?
That is closer to the kind of politics I'm interested in here.
I want to lean into pleasure, kindness, knowledge, enthusiasm, and joy—to make things that might make someone else curious enough to follow an idea somewhere unexpected.
At this point, A Million Scattered Pieces feels like a platform for curiosity and an organizing principle for exploration.
It's an excuse.
It's a passport for trying things.
It's an excuse to contact somebody I haven't spoken with in years. An excuse to follow an idea further than I otherwise would. An excuse to connect design, photography, sound, archives, technology, collaboration, research, community, and things I don't yet know how to categorize.
